Superman: Doomed #1 is the explosive kickoff to the Superman: Doomed crossover event, written by Scott Lobdell, Greg Pak, and Charles Soule, with art by Ken Lashley. This one-shot redefines the threat of Doomsday, transforming him from a brute force into a viral, existential menace that forces Superman to make an unthinkable choice.
The issue opens with Doomsday wreaking havoc on Honeymoon Island, incinerating everything within a hundred-yard radius due to a deadly virus embedded in his blood. Superman arrives too late—over 3,000 people are already dead. He saves the remaining fighter pilots and consults Dr. Shay Veritas, who reveals that Doomsday can now enter and exit the Phantom Zone at will.
Meanwhile, Lois Lane and Lana Lang investigate a mysterious coma outbreak in Smallville, donning hazmat suits to enter a quarantined zone. Lois, still affected by Brainiac’s influence, begins to show signs of psychic awareness. Elsewhere, Steel battles Doomsday in Botswana, only to be overwhelmed before Wonder Woman intervenes.
Back in Washington, the Justice League convenes to strategize. Surprisingly, Lex Luthor is present as a League member, foreshadowing his future role in Forever Evil. The League decides Superman must leave Earth to draw Doomsday away—but the plan fails when Doomsday reappears, triggering a brutal two-part battle.
In a shocking twist, Superman kills Doomsday, but not without consequence: he becomes infected by the virus and begins mutating into a Doomsday-like creature himself.
